Trump’s Emergency Declaration is a Threat to American Security

This critique based on the commentary about the US national government entitled Trump’s Emergency Declaration is a Threat to American Security. It wrote by Samantha Vinograd and appeared on the CNN Weekly Briefing on 18th February 2019. Samantha Vinograd is an American political commentator who serves as National Security Analyst at CNN. She is well-known for having been an advisor at various vital positions during Barack Obama's presidency. In this article, the author focuses on the impact and consequences of the emergency declaration issued by the US national government under its leadership of President Trump. To begin, the primary purpose of this article to provide supporting arguments that prove that the decision by President Trump to declare national emergency poses a threat to the security of the American people. The recent decision by President Trump to take this unprecedented and controversial move amid the impending legal challenges provides the bedrock for Vinograd’s arguments . In my view, the author presents a convincing argument by backing up her assumptions with credible shreds of evidence and logical explanations. For example, Vinograd outlines many reasons as to why she thinks the declaration of a national emergency is a threat to national security. It includes the massive funding needed for the preparation for the crisis — also, the time-consuming of the legal battles filed against the US national government’s decision. The cost was arising from the bruising confrontation between the US federal government and  Congress. The recurring costs whereby future US presidents are likely to resort to declaring national emergencies over a wide range of controversial issues as well as the value of abusing heavily punitive power. Conclusively, I agree with the author’s opinion that the national emergency declaration poses a threat to the security of the American people. The issues raised by the author touch every sphere of lives of the American people and therefore potentially present a security threat to the nation. For instance, the diversion of billions of dollars to address the emergency rather than spending these resources on important security priorities such as the development of counter-narcotics programs and military construction leaves the country vulnerable and exposes it to the threat of global terrorism. Most importantly, the fact that the decision by the US national government through President Trump to declare a national emergency while abusing the separation of powers between the executive, the legislative and the judiciary which enshrined in the US Constitution, threatens the long term security and democracy of the United States.
